Erin Bishop Meets Boris Grebenshchikov

During the height of the Cold War Robert Bishop met with a number of celebrities from the Soviet Union. Robert became acquainted with Boris Grebenshchikov in a rather serendipitous way while living in New York City. Most mornings Robert would go to Central Park to go rowing. One day on his way out the door he picked up a cassette tape left behind by his friend and associate Marina Albee. While out on the lake in Central Park he inserted the tape into his Walkman and began listening to Marina interviewing Boris. Upon returning to the penthouse after his row Robert told his partners that they had to bring Boris to the West and arrange for him to record. The task of arranging for Boris to come to the US was not easy, but I daresay it involved a great deal of vodka. When Boris arrived to the US Robert took him under his wing and Boris and Robert became good friends. In those early days the two had the most amazing conversations covering topics from politics to quantum physics. Robert, who had been in broadcast radio, felt that if Boris was going to record in the US, Michael Stipe of R.E.M. should produce the album. Robert’s Associates had never heard of REM as in those days REM was a little-known college band. But when Robert had listened to them play in the 40 W club in Athens Georgia he was certain that R.E.M. was going to be famous. Sadly, Roberts Associates didn’t agree and instead Dave Steward of the Eurythmics was tasked with producing the album to be called “Radio Silence”. Years later Erin Bishop received her opportunity to meet Boris Grebenshchikov. Erin was so excited to meet this friend of Robert’s that she had heard so much about. Erin and Boris hit it off from the start. Robert thought that it was only fitting that his soulmate Erin hit it off with his soul brother Boris.
